For two decades, the Pathfinder Group has built an impressive tradition of hosting the Pakistan Breakfast at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. This year’s gathering carried extra weight, commemorating twenty years of fostering connections between Pakistan and the global stage. The Pakistan Pavilion drew in a diverse array of entrepreneurs and members of the Pakistani community. Particular emphasis was placed on showcasing investment opportunities within Pakistan, through Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC). Distinguished figures such as Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar, Maj Gen Tabassum Habib, and Dr Amjad Saqib, among others, honoured the occasion with their presence. The Pathfinder Group significantly enhances Pakistan’s global presence and economic diplomacy through its active participation in the World Economic Forum (WEF). By showcasing Pakistan’s economic potential, advocating for policy reforms, and facilitating networking with global leaders, the group advocates for Pakistan as an appealing hub for investment and innovation. It underscores pivotal sectors of the Pakistani economy, showcases prosperous business endeavors, and fosters the formation of strategic alliances. Over the past two decades, numerous notable figures have graced the Pakistan Breakfast, including heads of state, government officials, and business magnates such as Mian Nawaz Shareef, Gen Pervez Musharraf, Imran Khan, Sartaj Aziz, Yousaf Raza Gillani, Gen Raheel Shareef, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Sherry Rehman, and many other seasoned politicians. Their attendance underscores the event’s significance as a platform for high-level dialogue and engagement. This enduring tradition at the WEF offers a valuable stage for spotlighting Pakistan’s economic potential, investment prospects, and rich cultural heritage to a global audience. The WEF was founded by Klaus Schwab in 1971 and Davos became the host city for the WEF annual meetings. Initially called the European Management Forum, it aimed to connect European business leaders. Renamed the WEF in 1987, it expanded globally, discussing economic globalization, technological advancements, and societal challenges. Davos is a picturesque Swiss town nestled in the Alps, evolving from a remote village into a renowned destination for conferences and tourism.

The early 2000s addressed globalization complexities, expanding initiatives and partnerships. In recent years, the WEF adapted to address emerging challenges like climate change and digital transformation, embracing virtual events during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout, the WEF played a crucial role in shaping global agendas, fostering dialogue, and catalyzing collective action on pressing global issues.

20 Years of Pakistan Pavilion at WEF

At the World Economic Forum, the Pakistan Pavilion stands out as a vibrant showcase of the nation’s economic promise, cultural richness, and innovative spirit. It offers a comprehensive platform for highlighting investment avenues across various sectors like agriculture, technology, and energy, fostering vital networking between Pakistani stakeholders and global investors. Engaging discussions and policy forums at the Pavilion delve into economic reforms and global trends, while also celebrating Pakistan’s cultural heritage and entrepreneurial dynamism. Through events organized by the Pathfinder Group, it acts as a nexus for sustainable development dialogues, epitomizing Pakistan’s active role in global economic and social discourse.

At the prestigious World Economic Forum in Davos, the Pathfinder Group hosted 4 impactful events showcasing Pakistan’s potential. At the Pakistan Pavilion, 3 events were organized by KCFR-SACC in collaboration with Pathfinder Group. The “Pakistan Breakfast,” attended by 200 guests, featured HE Anwaar ul Haq Kakar, Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan, as the Chief Guest. The event highlighted key themes like investment opportunities and progress in “Digital Pakistan” with esteemed speakers like Mirek Dusek, Managing Director of the WEF.

Digital Pakistan Breakfast hosted by Zarrar Sehgal, Chairman Pathfinder Group, was focused on Pakistan’s efforts towards digital transformation and the opportunities it presents for investment and development—the success of 10 million Asaan Mobile Accounts (AMA) appreciated by Edison Alliance and the WEF. The event featured IT experts and advocates of digital inclusion that resonates with the Pathfinder’s vision. Aamir Ibrahim (President JAZZ & Chairman MMBL), Syed Ali Naseer (Chief Data & Strategy Officer, Jazz) Arif Anis (MBE), Claude Dyer (Acting Head, World Economic Forum’s, Edison Alliance), Mirek Dusek (MD, WEF) and Dr Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan (Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Government Effectiveness), Shakeel Ahmed (GM, IT: USC), all the speakers appreciated efforts of Ikram Sehgal and Zarrar Sehgal for projecting Pakistan in letter and spirit.

Another success of the group is a joint initiative with the Edison Alliance aimed at advancing innovation, technology adoption, and sustainable practices across various sectors. They organize forums, seminars, and workshops to showcase innovative solutions, share best practices, and explore emerging trends in areas such as digital transformation, and innovation. The success of Pakistani companies in AI, cloud computing, e-commerce, robotics, big data, serving BMW, GE, and Google, showcasing substantial contributions to global technology was discussed by the participants. Claude Dyer emphasized the WEF’s commitment to inclusive dialogue by involving relevant stakeholders, different generations, and diverse nations in discussions on critical issues such as energy transition, trade, and climate.

“The Asaan Mobile Account has already been a great success, with millions of accounts opened and billions of transactions recorded. I think the theme of Davos this year, ‘Rebuilding Trust,’ probably applies to Pakistan as well in many ways.”

Jahanzeb Khan said, “Pakistan welcomes investors, ensuring transparency, security, and continuous policy improvements. The government is facilitating businesses.” Shakeel Ahmed said “Integrated VRG platform for digital payments. Serving 10 million AMA subscribers, equivalent to 50 million individuals. Enabling cashless transactions at Utility Stores.” Digitalization is the future and a developing country like Pakistan must invest in digital and financial inclusion as Aamir Ibrahim, and IT experts Ali Shah Asaani and Muhammad Salman Ali of VRG insightful discussions showcased Pakistan’s digital advancements.

Pakistan Pavilion at the WEF 54th annual meeting was applauded by the Pakistani community. The Pathfinder Group orchestrated engaging discussions with potential investors regarding the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC).

They hail from diverse sectors such as technology, government effectiveness, telecommunications, and digital innovation, collectively offering a comprehensive perspective on Pakistan’s digital and economic landscape. Kaan Terzioğlu spoke about Pakistan’s potential in the digital landscape. He said “VEON sees Pakistan as an attraction for international investors. The commitment to improving regulatory environments and infrastructure is essential for mutual success.” Aamir Ibrahim spoke at the event and shared the success of Jazz Cash which has more accounts (44 million) than the combined accounts of all banks.

The host Haya Sehgal moderated the sessions emphasizing the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC)’s initiatives to improve the ease of doing business and attract foreign investment. The events’ success resonated with the business community, recognizing SIFC’s positive impact on investment facilitation. The emphasis on showcasing investment opportunities through the SIFC during the 2024 event demonstrates the continued focus on attracting foreign investment and promoting economic development in Pakistan. The presence of the Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Managing Director of the WEF signifies the event’s importance and reach. The focus on “Rebuilding Trust”, the central theme of WEF 2023, resonates with Pakistan’s current socio-economic and political climate. The emphasis on digital financial inclusion and technological advancements highlights Pakistan’s efforts to embrace modernization and improve financial accessibility.

Dr Amjad Saqib gave his ideas of investment opportunities and shared success stories of microfinance loans and education loans. “We’ve launched the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management, alongside many institutions in Pakistan aimed at nurturing management professionals tailored to specific industry needs. By collaborating with us, businesses in the health sector can specify their needs for nursing and paramedic professionals.

Similarly, for the IT sector, we’re ready to meet demands in Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Digital Marketing. Financial inclusion is crucial. Akhuwat Foundation provides interest-free loans, inspiring microfinance.” Gulmina Ahmad shed light on the increasing role of women saying that Pakistani women are rebuilding their lives after earthquakes, droughts, floods, conflict, and displacement, whatever remains they have, they scavenge it together and rebuild.

Amb Rizwan explained that as a marketing agent of Pakistan, the invitation is clear, profit from the promise of Pakistan. Our country is on the verge of significant progress and development.

Pakistan’s Cultural Showcase Beyond the main breakfast event, Pakistan actively engaged with attendees through a vibrant Tea Stall set up on the Davos promenade. from 15-18 January 2024. Serving complimentary Kashmiri, Karak, and Peshawari tea, the stall offered a cultural immersion experience.

This showcased Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage and fostered positive engagement with global participants. Pavilions of countries and major companies are located on the main promenade. All attendees of the Forum walk through the promenade throughout the event days. The tea stall was designed to reflect Pakistan’s vibrant culture, with colourful decorations, traditional music including Qawaali and national songs, and friendly staff dressed in traditional attire, creating an immersive cultural setting for visitors.
