The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Annual Meeting 2025 from 20 to 24 January and the trip to Europe 2025 was an extraordinary journey undertaken by a 27-member team from the Pathfinder Group. Commencing on January 18th, the trip was filled with significant moments, from hosting impactful events at Davos, Switzerland, to exploring some of Europe’s most awe-inspiring destinations. The journey provided professional opportunities and a chance to experience Europe’s cultural and natural wonders. The trip also allowed participants to engage with global leaders, gain international exposure, and understand different economic and cultural perspectives, making it both an educational and an adventurous experience.

Departure from Karachi and Arrival in Zurich
January 18, 2025: The journey began at Karachi Airport at 10:30 pm, with the team carrying 250 kg of logistics for the Pakistan Pavilion at Davos, including portable stands, banners, and souvenirs for hotel staff. While a bit of confusion arose at the Emirates Airlines check-in due to the large volume, it was resolved, and the team checked in on time. After collecting their luggage, the team took a 45-seater bus to the Swiss Heidi Hotel in Maienfeld, which was particularly exciting for the 13 firsttime European travelers.

The scenic journey through Switzerland, with its snow-capped peaks and beautiful lakes, added to the thrill of the experience. The contrast between the serene Swiss landscape and the bustling environment of Karachi was so sharp, it left a strong impression on the team.

Exploring St. Moritz A Winter Wonderland
January 18, 2025: The following day, Mr. Ikram Sehgal Chairman of the Pathfinder Group arranged a visit to St. Moritz, a famous Swiss alpine resort known for its winter sports legacy. The town has hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, and its frozen lake transformed into a hub of activities like ice-skating, polo, and horse racing in winter. The crisp mountain air and snow-covered landscapes created a magical ambiance, making it a highlight of the trip.

Amusements on the Lake Festival
The team was fortunate to witness the ‘Amusements on the Lake’ Festival, which ran from January 19th to 23rd. The frozen lake turned into a lively venue featuring hockey matches, ice-skating performances, lined with shopping booths, gourmet food stalls, and live music performances. The festival provided an insight into Swiss traditions and their love for winter sports, making it an unforgettable experience.

Chantarella Funicular Railway
Another highlight was the Chantarella Funicular Railway, which has been operational since 1913. Initially built for a high-altitude health resort, the funicular now provides access to the Engadin mountains and the Corviglia ski area. This journey was particularly breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the snow-clad mountains.

Pakistan Pavilion at Davos
January 21, 2025: On the opening day of the Pakistan Pavilion, an Inspiring Pakistan Lunch was held at Schatzalp Restaurant, located 1,865 meters above sea level. This iconic venue features a large sun terrace with panoramic views and is accessible via the Schatzalp funicular. Hosting the event required meticulous planning, as transportation of the backdrop, sound system, and equipment needed careful meticulous coordination. The event began punctually at 12:30 pm, despite traffic challenges and heightened security but thanks to effective planning, most attendees arrived on time, and soon the venue was filled with government officials, business leaders, and civil society members. Soon the esteemed guests were engaged in dynamic discussions about Pakistan’s economic potential, investment opportunities, and inspiring success stories. The event set the tone for the rest of the Pakistan Pavilion’s engagements, reinforcing Pakistan’s presence at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos and furthering meaningful global connections. The main speakers were Michael Kugelman, Director of Wilson Center’s South Asia Institute, Adam Weinstein Research Fellow at Quincy Institute, Dr Ur Lustenberger President of SwissCham ASIA, Habib Paracha Founder & CEO Centurion Entertainment, Dr S Irfan Ali MD, President of Pioneer Medical Group, Hassan Sharif Khan, Entrepreneur, Nadira Panjwani Chairperson of KCFR, Syed Qassim Naveed Qamar, Special Assistant to Chief Minister Sindh for Invest and Public Private Partnership, Sindh Investment Department ending with a vote of thanks from Ikram Sehgal.

Pakistan Breakfast
On January 22, 2025, the Pathfinder Group marked a significant milestone as we prepared for our flagship event, the Pakistan Breakfast, at the prestigious Morosani Posthotel in Davos. A dedicated team from Swiss Heidi set out at 4:30 am, joining other team members from Panorama to complete all arrangements within 90 minutes before our esteemed guests arrived at 7:00 am. For the last 21 years, Pathfinder Group has been hosting the Pakistan Breakfast at Davos during the World Economic ForumForum’s (WEF),) Annual Meetings, providing a platform for high-level discussions featuring Pakistan’s leadership and global economic stakeholders. Zarrar Sehgal, Chairman of the Pathfinder Group, hosted the event, with Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the 21st Prime Minister of Pakistan, serving as the Chief Guest, making it a fitting coincidence as it marked the 21st Pakistan Breakfast at Davos. The distinguished speaker panel included Alexandre Raffoul, Member of the Executive Committee at WEF; Miftah Ismail, Former Finance Minister of Pakistan; and Ross Perot Jr., Chairman of the Perot Group. A special mention must be made of Ikram Sehgal, who has single-handedly hosted the Pakistan Breakfast for over two decades, driven by his patriotism and unwavering dedication. At seventy-eight, his energy and commitment remain unmatched as he continues to represent Pakistan at Davos without financial support from the government or the private sector.

As per tradition, the Pakistan Breakfast was fully booked, with attendees including representatives from the World Economic Forum, government delegations, SwissCham Asia, Bern businessmen, YPOs, civil society, and other distinguished guests.

Investment in Pakistan Lunch
Following the Breakfast, Pathfinder Group hosted the Investment in Pakistan Lunch, an exclusive platform showcasing Pakistan’s economic progress and investment opportunities. Esteemed speakers included Muhammad Salman Ali, CEO of VRG, and Abu Bakar, CEO of Pakistan Software Export Board. The session provided a comprehensive overview of Pakistan’s digital transformation, emphasizing innovation and technological advancements in the country.

Exploring Rhine Falls and Interlaken
January 24, 2025: After successfully concluding all events, the team visited Rhine Falls in Zurich, Europe’s largest waterfall. The cascading water at 23 meters per second was a mesmerizing sight. The boat ride near the falls added to the excitement as visitors got close enough to feel the mist.

We were on the southern bank of Rhine Falls, where the Laufen castle is situated. Boasting a thousand-year history, this medieval castle sits proudly above the Rhine Falls. You can take a glass elevator to go up to this castle and enjoy the panoramic views of the waterfall from here. There is a restaurant, playground and also an exhibition on the history of the castle here. Next, you can go down to the observation platform, either on foot or by the glass elevator.

There are three different viewing platforms on the southern bank. Belvedere, Kanzeli and Fischnetz. The Belvedere platform is wheelchair accessible, but the Kanzeli and Fischnetz platforms can only be reached by foot. This is about as close as you can get to the waterfalls without getting on a boat. Get ready to feel the mist on your face and hear the roaring waters as you get to these viewing spots.

Darbar Restaurant
The team then enjoyed a traditional South Asian lunch at the Darbar Indian Cuisine Restaurant, relishing familiar flavors such as daal, fish curry, mutton curry, and chutney. The comfort of home-like cuisine after days of European food was greatly appreciated by everyone.

Interlaken Between Two Lakes
On January 25, 2025, the journey continued to Interlaken, which is located between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun. The team also explored Höhematte Park, where they witnessed thrilling paragliding landings and took some memorable pictures. Another key highlight was the visit to the Yash Chopra Statue honoring the Bollywood filmmaker who helped popularize Switzerland as a tourist destination for South Asians.

Interlaken to Paris
Following an enriching experience in Interlaken, Switzerland, the team embarked on a scenic journey to Paris via bus. The route was adorned with picturesque landscapes, featuring lush green fields and rolling hills, creating a mesmerizing backdrop for our transit. A brief stop at McDonald’s for lunch provided an opportunity to reflect on Switzerland’s breathtaking beauty before resuming our journey. Upon arrival in Paris in late evening, the team checked into a hotel apartment located near the renowned ChampsÉlysées, offering seamless access to the city’s cultural and commercial hubs.

The Eiffel Tower: An Engineering Marvel
A key highlight of our visit to Paris was the Eiffel Tower, an enduring symbol of France and a masterpiece of engineering. Designed and constructed by Gustave Eiffel between 1887 and 1889, the tower stands at an impressive 330 meters (1,083 feet). Comprising 18,000 iron components held together by 2.5 million rivets, the tower was initially planned for dismantling after 20 years. However, its crucial role in radio transmissions ensured its preservation. Though it once held the title of the world’s tallest man-made structure, it was surpassed by New York’s Chrysler Building in 1930. Today, the Eiffel Tower remains one of the most visited paid monuments globally, attracting over seven million tourists annually.

A Newlywed Couple’s Parisian Experience
Ali and Zainab, a recently married couple and part of our group, shared their experience of Paris on a rainy evening. Their first day began with a visit to the Louvre Museum, where they marveled at sculptures and paintings, particularly the world-famous Mona Lisa. The gloomy weather outside made it the perfect day for exploring the museum. They then stopped for a meal at a quaint café called Happy Café before strolling across the Seine River towards the Eiffel Tower, arriving just in time to witness its sparkling illumination. A short boat ride in the chilly weather concluded their first day in Paris. On their second day, they explored the Pompidou Center, an architectural marvel distinct from Parisian cityscapes. The building’s panoramic views offered breathtaking sights of Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower. They later enjoyed an Italian meal, complementing their Parisian getaway. The day ended with a visit to the ChampsÉlysées, admiring its stunning storefronts, particularly Louis Vuitton, before concluding their Parisian experience with a cup of coffee, celebrating their last night in the city.

Arc de Triomphe A Monument of National Pride
Another remarkable landmark on our itinerary was the Arc de Triomphe, one of the world’s most famous commemorative monuments. Commissioned by Napoleon I in 1806 to honor the French army’s military achievements, the monument took approximately 30 years to complete.

Standing at 50 meters (164 feet) in height and 45 meters (148 feet) in width, the arch is strategically positioned at Place Charles de Gaulle (formerly Place de l’Étoile), where twelve grand avenues converge. It holds national significance as the culmination point of the Tour de France and the starting venue for the annual Bastille Day military parade.

Place de la Madeleine: A Blend of History and Luxury
The team also explored Place de la Madeleine, located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. This district is home to several historical and political landmarks, including Église de la Madeleine, Palais de l’Élysée, and Théâtre de la Madeleine. Originally conceived by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806 as the Temple de la Gloire to honor his army, the structure’s neoclassical design, featuring Greek and Roman-inspired columns, was later transformed into a Catholic church dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. Following Napoleon’s abdication in 1814, the Bourbon monarchy repurposed it as a religious site, marking a significant historical shift. Beyond its historical significance, La Madeleine is also a hub for luxury shopping and the area is home to high-end fashion boutiques, gourmet food shops, and prestigious brands, making it a prime destination for both cultural exploration and retail indulgence. Its proximity to the Palais de l’Élysée, the official residence of the French President, further enhances its prominence within France’s political and cultural landscape.

Departure and the Journey to Vatican City:
January 28, 2025: After three splendid nights in Paris, our team was divided into three groups. One group traveled to Dubai, while I, along with my wife, Humera, was given the opportunity by Sir Ikram to visit the Vatican City. A third group of six members, whose Dubai visas had been rejected twice, were given a special travel plan arranged by Sir Ikram, covering Amsterdam, Milan, Venice, and Rome. Upon arrival at FCO Fiumicino Airport in Rome, we embarked on a 45-minute drive to our hotel, Hotel Della Conciliazione, located within walking distance of Vatican City. The hotel proved to be exceptionally comfortable, featuring an excellent buffet breakfast and a gracious and helpful staff.

A Day Trip to Florence – A Historical Adventure
On our first day, seeking adventure, we planned a visit to Florence, located 275 km from Rome. We took a train to Florence, but due to a language barrier, we initially struggled to confirm our route. After consulting fellow passengers, we discovered that our train only traveled to Orte Terminal, requiring us to switch to another train bound for Chiusi-Chianciano Terminal, and finally, another train leading to Florence. This unexpected detour extended our journey to five hours, and we arrived by evening, leaving limited time for exploration.

Despite the constraints, we managed to visit Santa Maria Novella, a stunning example of Renaissance architecture, and took in scenic views along the Arno River. Florence is divided into four historic districts, each named after its representative church.

The Piazza Santa Maria Novella, near the train station, is one of the city’s most beautiful squares, housing significant artworks. The Arno River, central to Florence’s landscape, support various functions and features iconic bridges, though it has a history of devastating floods, including the 1966 Great Flood of Florence.

Basilica of Santa Trinita, Florence
The beautiful but little-visited 14th-century Santa Trinita (Holy Trinity) houses several artistic gems. The Sassetti chapel has scenes from the life of St. Francis (1495) by Ghirlandaio, while the altarpiece shows his famous Adoration of the Shepherds (1485).

Exploring the Timeless Wonders of Rome:
On January 30, we visited Saint Peter’s Basilica during a significant occasion—the opening of the Holy Door after 25 years. This door was inaugurated by Pope Francis on December 24 as part of the “Jubilee of Hope.” Traditionally sealed, the Pope strikes the door with a hammer on the first day of the Holy Year, symbolizing spiritual renewal. At the end of the Holy Year, it will be closed again. Holy Years are celebrated every 25 years, with extraordinary Holy Years in 1933 and 1983. The current Holy Door, featuring bronze panels by Vico Consorti, has been in place since 1949, replacing wooden panels from 1749.

The Grandeur of Saint Peter’s Basilica:
Saint Peter’s Basilica stands as one of Rome’s most significant religious and architectural landmarks. Built on the site where Saint Peter is believed to have been martyred and buried under Emperor Nero’s rule, the basilica seamlessly blends Byzantine and Roman architectural styles. Notable features include its iconic dome, St. Peter’s Tomb, and the Baldacchino, along with exquisite marble mosaics, paintings, tapestries, and towering columns.

One of the most famous features of St. Peter’s Basilica is The Dome which was designed by Michelangelo and completed in 1590. It is one of the largest domes in the world and can be seen from many places in the surrounding regions.

Pieta is a famous Renaissance sculpture that is attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti, created between the years 1499 and 1500. Housed in St. Peter’s Basilica, the sculpture is a beautifully detailed representation of the Virgin Mary mourning over the body of Jesus Christ. It is carved from a single block of Carrara marble and was one of Michelangelo’s earliest and most outstanding works.

At the heart of the basilica lies the Papal Altar, where only the Pope can officiate Mass. Designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, it encompasses the “Altar of the Chair,” with key features such as St. Peter’s Baldacchino and St. Peter’s Chair. Beneath this altar rests the revered tomb of St. Peter, making it a profoundly significant site. Until 1963, the Papal Altar also served as the venue for papal coronation ceremonies.

The Colosseum – A Testament to Roman Glory:
Our first stop was the Colosseum. As the tour bus rounded a corner and the Colosseum came into view, we were left in awe of its immense scale and grandeur. This vast amphitheater, constructed during the Flavian dynasty, was commissioned in 70-72 CE and completed in 80 CE under Emperor Titus.

As a gift to the Roman people, the Colosseum stands as a powerful symbol of Rome’s imperial might and a testament to the city’s enduring history. It once hosted gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, and even today, it continues to captivate visitors with its architectural brilliance and historical significance.

The Spanish Steps – A Grand Architectural Marvel
Our next destination was the Spanish Steps, a grand staircase that connects Piazza di Spagna to the Church of Trinità dei Monti atop Pincian Hill. Climbing these historic steps offered breathtaking views of the city and an opportunity to appreciate their cultural and artistic significance.

The Pantheon A Masterpiece of Ancient Rome
We then visited the Pantheon, a marvel of ancient Rome renowned for its remarkable preservation and architectural splendor. Described by Michelangelo as the “work of angels,” this monumental structure remains one of the city’s most awe-inspiring sites.

Piazza Navona A Hub of Baroque Splendor
Another highlight of our journey was Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s most famous squares, home to the Baroque Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone and Palazzo Pamphili.

Overlooking this vibrant square is Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s iconic Fountain of the Four Rivers, an artistic masterpiece representing the major rivers of the four continents known at the time: the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges, and the Río de la Plata.

The Victor Emmanuel II National Monument
Finally, we visited the Victor Emmanuel II National Monument, also known as the Vittoriano or Altare della Patria. This grand monument, constructed between 1885 and 1935, was built to honor Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. Its imposing presence and intricate design serve as a national symbol of Italy’s unity and heritage.

On January 28, the third group of six men was excited to explore the most memorable tour of their life as they were at the Paris airport to board and start their exclusive tour of Amsterdam, Milan, Venice and Rome.

Amsterdam
As one of the most famous cities in the world, Amsterdam is synonymous with vibrant culture, rich history, inclusiveness and beautiful canals. The National Monument, constructed in 1956, is dedicated to those who lost their lives in World War II and subsequent armed conflicts. Located in Dam Square, directly opposite the Royal Palace, this solemn monument serves as the focal point of the Remembrance of the Dead Ceremony, held annually on May 4th, marking the anniversary of its unveiling.

The Amsterdam Canals
Amsterdam’s iconic canals provided a picturesque experience as we strolled along their banks, lined with beautiful houses, restaurants, and cafés. Watching the boats gliding by was a truly quintessential Amsterdam experience—no visit to the city is complete without a leisurely walk along its historic waterways.

Munt Tower (Munttoren)
The Munttoren, or Mint Tower, was originally a guard tower that formed part of Amsterdam’s old city fortifications. It derives its name from the former coin-minting house behind it, which operated in 17th-century Amsterdam. The most captivating feature of the Munttoren is its carillon, which still chimes every quarter-hour, adding a charming ambiance to the cityscape.

Milan “Fashion is not just about clothes, it’s a lifestyle”
Milan Tours delve into the city’s rich history and cultural heritage, including landmarks such as the beautiful Duomo di Milano, the breathtaking Milano countryside, and the world-famous fashion quarter, the Quadrilatero della Moda.

Duomo di Milano:
The Duomo di Milano, Milan’s stunning cathedral, captivates all visitors with its intricately carved spires and statues, resembling a marble forest. Construction began in 1386 under Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti and lasted nearly five centuries, symbolizing the city’s grandeur and historical importance.

Castello Sforzesco:
The Sforza Castle, a spectacular fortress in the heart of Milan, features vast gardens and a beautiful park at its rear entrance. The grand fountain at the main entrance, along with numerous wooden benches, made it a pleasant place to relax and soak in the city’s historic charm.

Arco della Pace:
After visiting the Fortress Sforzesco, our team members stopped at the Arco della Pace (Arch of Peace), located just beyond the large park. Its ornate design and grand structure were reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, making it a delightful spot for photography.

Venice:
Everything you’ve heard about Venice is true. It is singularly beautiful and romantic. Its architecture and interiors are unmatched. Getting a gondola down the Grand Canal is one of the best things to do in the whole wide world.

Ponte di Rialto
The Ponte di Rialto (Rialto Bridge), a historic bridge over the Venetian Lagoon, has been a central landmark in Venice for centuries. It has played a crucial role in trade and commerce, once hosting a gold market and stock exchange when Venice was the economic powerhouse of Western Europe. The bridge is famously referenced in Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice, further cementing its cultural and historical importance. Crossing the Venetian Lagoon via this bridge was an enchanting experience.

No trip to Rome is complete without visiting the Colosseum, one of the most iconic structures of the ancient world. Standing before this massive amphitheater, which once hosted gladiator battles and grand spectacles, was an unforgettable moment, bringing history to life in a profound way.

Roman Forum:
Visiting the Roman Forum felt like stepping into a living history book. The ancient ruins, towering columns, and grand temple remnants left us in awe, offering a deep connection to the rich history of Ancient Rome. Our journey also took us to Vatican City, the world’s smallest country, home to the Pope and the heart of the Roman Catholic Church. This independent city-state’s breathtaking architecture and historical significance made it a truly memorable experience.

Trevi Fountain, Rome:
Rome, often referred to as the Eternal City, is home to numerous historic landmarks, including the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, and the world-famous Trevi Fountain. As one of the most renowned Baroque fountains, the Trevi Fountain stands as an artistic and architectural marvel, captivating visitors with its grand design and cascading waters. Beyond its breathtaking beauty, the fountain is also famous for its long-standing coin-throwing tradition. According to legend, tossing a coin over one’s shoulder into the fountain ensures a future return to Rome. A second coin is said to bring love, while a third coin promises marriage to the love that was found. This tradition has led to an astonishing collection of approximately €3,000 per day, amounting to nearly €1.5 million annually. These funds are collected and used to support charitable causes, making the fountain not only a symbol of romance and hope but also an instrument of goodwill.

Final Destination – Dubai:
Dubai’s beauty lies in its fusion of over 200 nationalities, creating a vibrant melting pot of cultures and traditions. This city has transformed from a desert into one of the world’s most luxurious urban centers. With a population where more than half are expatriates, Dubai offers a balance of liberal and conservative cultures. On January 28, 2025, a group of 12 eager travelers arrived in Dubai, many of whom considered it a second home due to its welcoming atmosphere and ease of communication.

Known as a shopping paradise, the group aimed to take advantage of Dubai’s more affordable shopping options compared to Europe, all while exploring the city’s stunning attractions.

Global Village, Dubai

And if you want to relax, there are gazebos, cafes, etc.
