Dedicated Ms. Nazish Jameel, Teaching Support Associate at Green Crescent Trust awarded at the event of OSP

This is the story of a courageous girl from a disadvantaged neighborhood in Karachi’s Korangi area. Despite facing challenging circumstances, she became the first person in her family to graduate and is now serving as a Town Officer after passing the Sindh Public Service Commission examination and working in the Town Municipal Corporation Landhi, District Korangi in Karachi. Additionally, she wants to inspire young minds to bring positive change in the education sector of Pakistan and Sindh. Despite being orphaned as a child, Nazish Jameel was dedicated to developing and nurturing her education and skills and even as she faced difficult circumstances, her successes continued to grow. After receiving primary education from the only government school in the area, she continued her education at The Green Crescent Trust Hilal School. Following her father’s death, The Green Crescent Trust (GCT) provided support to Nazish and other children through their Orphan Support Program.

She excelled in her studies, achieving high marks in her matriculation from Karachi Board and passing the FSC pre-medical examination from Government College Korangi No. 4 with second-division honors. She then completed her Bachelor’s in English Literature with first-division honors from Karachi University.

It wasn’t easy for a girl from an Urdu medium background to earn a degree in English literature; this was a significant achievement for her and her family. After completing her matriculation in Urdu medium, she faced numerous challenges when she transitioned to studying in English medium in college and university. However, her perseverance and determination to move forward played a crucial role in overcoming these difficulties and earning a degree in English literature.

Role of Green Crescent Trust

In her own words, “I completed my education at the Green Crescent Trust Hilal School in Sindh, where I received support from my teachers. Their mentorship extended beyond my school years and guided me through college and university, shaping a significant and enduring relationship with the Green Crescent Trust. Their advice and encouragement fueled my determination, leading me to take various examinations. Although I faced disappointment initially, I persisted and channeled my efforts into passing the Sindh Public Service Commission examination in May 2024. This accomplishment paved the way for my current role as a Town Officer in Landhi Town, where I continue to apply myself diligently.

The credit for all these achievements goes to my mother and siblings, it was their complete confidence and support that made me realise that, “Yes I can”. It was only due to their tireless work and educational sacrifices, I completed my graduation in English Literature from Karachi University. I was then admitted to English Literature at Federal Urdu University Karachi.

Professional Journey

To overcome financial difficulties and meet my educational expenses, I began my professional career as an English linguistics teacher at Green Crescent Trust Hilal School after completing my intermediate studies. From 2016 to 2022, The Green Crescent Trust recognized me as an excellent teacher and provided opportunities to improve my skills and advance my career through their teacher’s training program organized by CERD. This, along with the confidence I gained from the Green Crescent Trust, led me to The Fazaia Inter College Korangi Creek in 2022. In 2023, I was appointed as a Teaching Support Associate under the Sindh Education Foundation, aiming to play a significant role in shaping the minds of future leaders and enhancing the quality of education for young minds from underserved communities.

These eight years were a memorable and educational period for me. Despite facing various challenges and setbacks, including clearing multiple exams but not being selected for the positions, my determination never wavered. After undergoing numerous trials, I finally secured a role as a Town Officer in 2024, which I attribute to the support of my family, particularly my mother, and the guidance of the Green Crescent Trust.

However, I consider this achievement only a milestone and not the final destination. I believe that with continued hard work and dedication, I will be rewarded with even greater success in the future”

Family dynamics

Nazish’s personal life is also an example that with the support of family and their encouragement every girl can make their parents proud. The important role in Nazish’s story is that of her mother and siblings who supported Nazish at every turn.

She has six sisters and two brothers. The sisters took responsibility for the financial affairs of the house and the mother undertook the education and training of her children. Thus, with the mutual efforts of all, today Nazish is a government officer, one of her brothers is a police constable while the other is an FSC Part II student.

The credit for all these achievements goes to her mother and siblings, it was their confidence and support that made her realize that yes I can. However, due to the tireless work and educational sacrifices of her mother and siblings, she completed her graduation and attained the post of town officer.

In the end here is a brief introduction Green Crescent Trust which is playing a crucial role in the education sector of Sindh

GCT is a pioneering non-profit in Pakistan’s education sector whose school introduced the smart classroom concept

In 2012, the Green Crescent Trust achieved the milestone of being possibly the first non-profit in Pakistan’s education sector to implement the “Smart classroom” concept in its charitable school. This initiative aimed to effectively utilize the latest technology to educate children from underprivileged communities. The concept was initially launched at the Sharifabad campus in Karachi, utilizing projectors and touchscreens to introduce a technology-based smart learning system. This occurred even before some elite private schools in Karachi, which charged high fees, introduced their technology-based smart classroom systems.

This significant step inspired other non-profits and non-governmental organizations in the education sector to implement similar technology-based teaching systems in their schools. Recently, the Sindh Education Foundation introduced smart learning systems using computer tablets to launch a crash school education program for illiterate children in remote, underprivileged areas of the province.

GCT prioritizes minimal spending on extravagant school buildings to ensure maximum donations are allocated to its primary educational mission:

The main focus of GCT has always been to promptly establish a quality school in underprivileged areas or villages in Sindh that lack educational institutions. Rather than waiting for the construction of a grand school campus, the onus is on opting for utilizing rental premises or constructing makeshift facilities with minimal time and cost. This approach guarantees the swift initiation of our core mission – providing education to underprivileged children. Building expensive academic structures has never been our main concern. By doing so, we ensure that the funds received from our generous donors are primarily utilized for enrolling out-of-school children, with minimal expenditure on physical academic facilities. Numerous instances in GCT’s history demonstrate their commitment to promptly starting educational services, such as in Sohrab Khan Goth, Rehri Goth, and Wangi Goth areas in Karachi. Proper school campuses were developed in these underserved areas once adequate financial resources became available. Temporary schooling facilities were established in flood-affected regions in Sindh, where existing academic infrastructure had been destroyed by natural disasters. The impoverished Mehran Town area in Karachi stands as a testament to GCT’s dedication, providing quality education for over 25 years. Four charitable schools in this disadvantaged locality cater to a total of 1,000 students. Later, it was decided to construct a cutting-edge school campus in the same area upon realizing the need for a large academic facility to address the issue of out-of-school children in the community. This decision was made possible by a generous and dedicated donor who funded the construction of this school facility. Our CEO, patrons, and trustees all share a strong determination to address the problems of out-of-school children in Sindh.
