From the Editorial Desk (September 2024)

Throughout life’s journey, one often meets individuals who leave an indelible mark on our lives and on our hearts and minds with their integrity, wisdom, and dedication. As I launch the 13th, 14th, and 15th volumes in my series “A Personal Chronicle of Pakistan,” I find it fitting to dedicate books works to three remarkable individuals who have excelled in their service and devotion to Pakistan. HH Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, late Sartaj Aziz, and General Waheed Kakar.

HH Sheikh Nahyan’s investment (person and material) in Pakistan, starting with the banking sector, cannot be overstated. His pivotal purchase of majority shares in Habib Credit and Exchange Bank (former BCCI and later Bank Alfalah) right at the outset of privatisation was not just a financial commitment but a vote of confidence in Pakistan’s future. His wisdom and foresight in making private investment tremendously successful laid the foundation for what would become one of the country’s leading financial institutions. My journey with him was one of learning and growth, where his mentorship started my education in banking, and his trust (and patience) with and on me allowed my participation in the expansion of Bank Alfalah’s presence from 3 branches to a thousand plus, and then beyond Pakistan borders. “Terms of Frustration” is a tribute to his unwavering belief in Pakistan and his role in fostering its economic resilience.

Late Sartaj Aziz’s intellect and dedication to Pakistan’s agricultural and water policies have been instrumental in addressing some of the nation’s most pressing challenges. That he served the world of food and agriculture was marked by the innovative groundwork he laid as the foundations of the policies of the UN’s FAO while serving for over 15 years in Rome. His work on the National Water Policy of 2018 is a testament to his ability to bring together diverse stakeholders and craft a policy that serves the collective good. The policy took over a decade to finalize and reflects his deep understanding of Pakistan’s water issues and his commitment to sustainable solutions for our shortage of water, and its requirement for agriculture though Shahbaz Sharif is different from Mian Nawaz Sharif in choosing good people, but then Nawaz is his elder brother and he cannot stand his ground. Take the example of Nawaz Sharif choosing Mariam Nawaz over the claims of his son Hamza in Punjab! In the same manner J A Rahim as Secretary General PPP did for Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Sartaj Aziz once told me, “I studied what your grand uncle did for PPP and did it better”. Sartaj Aziz excelled whether it was as Agriculture Minister, Finance Minister or Foreign Minister. Most of all he laid the organisational ground work for Mian Nawaz Sharif’s PML (N) as its Secretary General for many years, Dreams and the Reality is dedicated to Sartaj Aziz, not just for his contributions to policy but for his enduring legacy of service to Pakistan. His sharp mind and unwavering commitment to the country have left a lasting impact that will be felt for generations to come. He was in effect “The President of Pakistan that Never Was” thanks to the penchant of the Sharifs to pick personal favourites, however small in stature and competence they may be.

General Waheed Kakar’s legacy is one of humility, integrity, and steadfastness. At a time when personal gain could have easily overshadowed national interest, he set a precedent by taking a principled stand against political involvement. His refusal of an extension after he had held free and fair elections and a grateful Ms Benazir sought to keep him on, exemplified the highest standards of military ethics and moral courage that a COAS Pakistan Army must display. His actions and decisions serve as a model of integrity. His leadership during a critical period in Pakistan’s history was marked by a deep sense of duty and an unwavering commitment to the principles of the military. The Kakar Model is a tribute to General Kakar for his exemplary service and the high standards he set for military leadership in Pakistan. He is a hero not just for what he did but for what he chose not to do—remaining true to his principles even when faced with immense pressure.

As I reflect on the contributions of HH Sheikh Nahyan, Sartaj Aziz, and General Kakar, I am reminded of the importance of integrity and dedication in service to the nation. These three individuals have not only been outstanding personalities deserving accolades, they have individually demonstrated a deep commitment to Pakistan’s development. Their legacy is one of service, integrity, and excellence—values that we must strive to uphold in our own lives.

I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the esteemed speakers who have contributed to the success of the launch of the new volumes of ‘A Personal Chronicle of Pakistan.’ HH Sheikh Nahyan’s words resonate deeply with the spirit of Pakistan and its people. His acknowledgement of the courage to challenge authority and the support to choose the correct path is incredibly motivating. His message provides significant value to our venture, forging connections between our past and future.

I appreciate the wisdom of Air Marshal Masood Akhtar and his insights into the broader implications of our historical and current challenges. It provides a valuable perspective that enhances the relevance of this work. He has tremendous contributions to national security and his candidness in addressing policy issues have been invaluable. His collaboration with me in the National Defence College (now NDU) has been marked by mutual respect and shared goals. His support led to the initiative we’ve worked on together in building the very FIRST concept paper for “National Security Strategy” in Pakistan. AM Masood Akhtar continues his deep commitment to improving our National Security Strategy. While I cherish his support and friendship, I look forward to his input in the “National Security Strategy” circa 2025 (Volume 16) which I am engaged in working on presently.

Senator Mushahid Hussain’s insights into both domestic and international affairs have consistently demonstrated his sharp intellect and strategic acumen. His detailed analysis of the civil-military dynamics and the historical context is invaluable. His observations on the Kakar Model and the broader implications of our political and military history have enriched the discussion. His tenure as the Information Minister and his clear grasp of complex issues made him a standout figure, and it was a privilege to have him share his thoughts on this occasion. I always felt that he and Javed Jabbar, who both serving as Ministers in separate administrations, could have been wonderful Foreign Ministers of Pakistan. His friendship and thoughtful remarks are deeply appreciated by me.

I convey my gratitude to Lt Gen Ali Kuli Khan, who is one of my closest friends. His personal stories and heartfelt praise for Gen Kakar bring an immensely significant aspect to the book. Gen Ali Kuli’s steadfastness and bravery have left an indelible mark on our history. His refusal to surrender during the 1971 War despite the Eastern Command surrendering highlighted his unwavering commitment to his principles and country. This man was born to be COAS Pakistan Army, Mian Nawaz Sharif choose not to make him not only to his own personal detriment but to the detriment of the Army and the country. Gen Musharraf was a good professional soldier and a good man but his ambition and love of good life did not go with the appointment of COAS Pakistan Army. His ultimate aim in becoming COAS was to become President, and that he became! Gen Ali Kuli’s enduring friendship and support have been a great source of strength to me, I greatly value his continued mentorship and encouragement.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is one of the most consummate politicians of Pakistan. Despite his differences on policy he stayed loyal to Mian Nawaz Sharif until recently, when he registered a separate political party. His loyalty to Mian Nawaz Sharif personally was misplaced, Mian Sahib thinks of nothing beyond his family and close friends. His candid reflections on the challenges and persistent issues we face as a nation remind us of the need for introspection and reform. His dedication to public service and commitment to the principles of the Constitution are truly commendable. One greatly appreciates his stint as a very competent and successful PM, for me he is the PM-in-waiting.

The launch of these three volumes holds great personal significance for me, further elevated by the attendance of my family, friends, and colleagues, whose unwavering support has accompanied me throughout my journey. My son, grandchildren, wife, and sisters-in-law have always been my pillars of strength, and their presence at this event means more to me than words can express. The support of old course-mates and colleagues from the Army, who have stood by me through thick and thin, is a reminder of the bonds forged in the crucible of military service—bonds that endure beyond the battlefield.

I also want to express my gratitude to the dedicated staff of Pathfinder Group As I look back on these moments and the people who have shaped them, I am reminded of the words of Rumi, “If you can live in the hearts of men, then you are going to live on forever.”
