William Hague said that he judged “that the deterioration of the security situation in Damascus puts our embassy staff and premises at risk.”
Britain had previously reduced the nun10 of staff at the premises, meaning less than 10 people were working there before Hague’s announcement. Hague insists'” the move would not reduce “the UK’s commitment to active diplomacy to maintain pressure on the Assad regime to end the violence.” Syria’s main opposition group said it has formed a “military bureau” to organize and unify the armed resistance to the regime of President Bashar Assad. The SNC made the announcement in a statement. The group also was holding a news conference in Paris. The group says the government’s crackdown on the country’s uprising has forced Syrians “to bear arms in self-defense.” At the start of the Syrian revolt nearly a year ago, many protesters said they wanted to remain peaceful. But as the assault continued, an armed insurgency comprised largely of defectors from the military has developed to fight the regime.
Key Egyptians accused of harming military’s image
Military prosecutors are to decide whether to take action over a complaint against 12 leading Egyptians accused of harming the army’s image and seeking to over throw the state, judicial sources said on March 8. Among those named were Wael Ghonim, the Google executive who administered the Facebook page that helped spark Egypt’s revolution and internationally acclaimed writer Alaa al-Aswany. A decision on the complaint, backed by 700 people, will be made after prosecutors interview the plaintiff and examine documents submitted, the source said. The 12 are also accused of “provoking discord.” Among them are female presidential candidate Bothain Kamel, television presenters Rim Magued and Yosri Foda, as well as pro-democra- cy militants George Ishaq, Nawara Negm and Asmaa Mahfuz. No specifics were given on what they were all alleged to have done. The latest case illustrates the tension in Egypt, where the military took power last year when President Hosni Mubarak stepped down.
New Terror threat in Kenya
Kenya faced a new terror threat on March 14 after a grenade attack blamed on Somali Islamist militia killed six people and injured 63 in a bus terminal in the capital Nairobi. Four grenades were thrown only yards apart from a car driving past the busy terminal, Internal Security Minister George Saitoti said. Dozens of buses were parked in the terminal packed with Kenyans leaving for the weekend to visit relatives outside the capital.
Kenyan authorities blamed the attack on the hardline Islamist Shehab militia which Kenyan troops are battling in neighbouring Somalia. “We suspect this is the work of Al-Shebab, but all this will come out in the investigations,” Saitoti told reporters. Al-Shebab has threatened Kenya since it sent its troops into Somalia in mid-October to dislodge the Islamic insurgents control- ling swathes of the south, which it accused of a series of kidnappings and attacks on its territory. Deploring the attack, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka said “This is an act of people who think that they can puncture the resolve to fight terror. It is a difficult moment but it should strengthen our resolve and I am sure we will win.” Two people died on the spot, one on the way to hospital, while three other victims succumbed to their injuries during the night, hospital sources said. “The death toll is now six, and we have 63 people undergoing treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital, 11 of them were seriously injured,” Saitoti said.
