Letters to the Editor (March 2012)

Dear Sir,

In view of the prevailing situation in the country I am constrained to submit a few lines about HOPE and LIE. This should not be considered a sermon or advice, but the humble thoughts of an old person. I have not blamed anyone and leave deductions to our learned readers. I am not a pessimist and verily hope that some meticulously honest, far-sighted, thoroughly patriot person who is filled with unshakable resolution in the face of adversity will ascent to sort out the horrid situation.

HOPE: We live on hope but for how long do we have to wait for a solution to the numerous intricate problems of our motherland? Hope is an anchor of the soul both sure and steadfast; it takes us from strength to strength. In the prevailing gloomy situation, to continue hoping for better things, there is little or no ground for hope. How vain and deceitful are human hopes? But still, we must continue to hope, hoping against hope. Even a glimpse of a mirage gives us veritable hope. We feel mortified when the realization of our hope is put off and delayed. Hope deferred makes the heart sick and it is hardly a matter for surprise that the best brains of the country are at last succumbing to despair. However, we earnestly hope that our prayers will not prove to be a cry in the wilderness.

LIE: Can conscious be kept clean of the stains of lies? How can a lie be kept hidden? How long can a lie survive? How long can it be defended? Can a person of wisdom, a sane person, a person known to adhere to the straight path, a person who is unfalteringly devoted to duty tell lies before the custodians of justice? Having taken oath as the head of a prestigious public office and signed relevant documents, can such a person be expected to tell lies? Can justice be mocked with lies? Can a person holding a high public office who is entrusted with high decision-making power, tell lies to save someone who is known to be a liar and uses corrupt methods for amassing wealth? Some of our leaders are adept at holding with the hare and running with the hounds, they exceed in wickedness even some of the notoriously wicked characters of history. Some of our political leaders employ henchmen and turncoats to protect them. All their activities revolve around lies and for these services they are paid and rewarded heavily at the expense of the public exchequer. The solution to the murders of some eminent personalities (including Ms BENAZIR) has become enigma and here too, most probably LIES are playing the main role.

When will time bring in revenge? Of course the heavy rod of NEMESIS will strike the real culprits.

Sincerely,
Col. MA Gilani (Retd)
